MOTOR INSURANCE
This form of insurance provides compensation for losses
following incidents as a result of the use of mechanically
propelled vehicles on public roads. In Nigeria, it is
governed by the Road Traffic Act of 1945 as amended.
In the main, we have:
(a) Third Party Insurance Cover
(b) Third Party, Fire and Theft Insurance Cover and
(c) Comprehensive Motor Insurance Cover.
Third-Party Only (TPO):
This covers any damage or injury you cause to others or
their property while driving. It's the minimum legal
requirement in many places.
Comprehensive:
This covers damage to your own vehicle, as well as third-party
liability. It offers more extensive protection but also
has a higher premium. Typically, Comprehensive Motor Insurance
coverage can vary depending on the insurer and policy,
but typically, cover includes:
1. Third-party liability:
Covers bodily injury or property damage caused to others.
2. Own damage:
Covers damage to your vehicle, such as from accidents,
theft, or natural disasters.
3. Medical expenses:
Covers medical bills for you or your passengers in case of an accident.
4. Legal expenses:
Covers legal costs if you're involved in a lawsuit.
Factors Affecting Premium:
Several factors influence the premium you'll pay:
Vehicle type: The type, age, and value of your vehicle can affect
the premium.
Driver profile:Your age, driving experience, and driving
record can impact your premium.
Location: Where you live can influence the risk of
accidents and, therefore, the premium.
Coverage level:The type and extent of coverage you choose
will affect the premium.
